How to Configure IMAP on Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail

Promail supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP on every mailbox. This guide covers IMAP setup (recommended for two-way sync) on the three most popular desktop clients.
## IMAP vs POP3
IMAP keeps your messages on the server and syncs them across all your devices. POP3 downloads and optionally deletes messages from the server. Use IMAP unless you have a specific reason for POP3.
## Server Settings

## Microsoft Outlook
1. Open Outlook > File > Add Account
2. Enter your email address and click Advanced Options > Let me set up my account manually
3. Choose IMAP and enter the server settings above
## Mozilla Thunderbird
1. Open Thunderbird > Account Settings > Account Actions > Add Mail Account
2. Enter your name, email address, and password, then click Configure Manually
3. Set incoming to promail.maxnate.com:993 (SSL) and outgoing to promail.maxnate.com:587 (STARTTLS)
## Apple Mail
1. Open Mail > Add Account > Other Mail Account
2. Enter your name, email address, and password
3. If auto-discovery fails, enter the server details manually
## App Passwords (Recommended)
For each client or device, generate a dedicated app password in your Promail dashboard under Mailboxes > App Passwords. This lets you revoke access to a single device without changing your main password.
